Origin of the Teriyaki Shrimp

Shrimp teriyaki is a dish that blends Japanese teriyaki flavors with the succulent shrimp, a popular seafood enjoyed worldwide. Teriyaki is a cooking technique and a sauce from Japan. It involves grilling or broiling foods with glaze of soy sauce, sake or mirin and sugar. The term “teriyaki” comes from “teri” which refers to the shine given by the sugar. The “yaki” refers to a cooking method of grilling or broiling.

Teriyaki sauce with shrimp is a popular variation that highlights the versatility of the sauce. In Japan, teriyaki is traditionally used with fish, but people started adapting it globally and started including all types of protein. Some of those include chicken, beef, pork and many more.

The first time I tried shrimp teriyaki was at a seaside restaurant, where the combination of the sweet, savory teriyaki sauce with the fresh, tender shrimp was unforgettable. It quickly became one of my top five most favorite meals.

Why the recipe works?

This teriyaki shrimp and rice recipe works because it balances perfectly all flavors giving an umami flavor. The shrimp are cooked to perfection, absorbing the flavors of the sauce while remaining tender and juicy.

Key ingredients include coconut aminos, which serve as soy sauce substitute. Fresh ginger and garlic add aromatic depth while a touch of brown sugar enhances the natural sweetness of the shrimp. Rice wine vinegar introduces a hint of acidity that balances the overall taste.

Some tips I would recommend following for perfecting the recipe are ensuring the shrimps are fully thawed and patter dry before cooking to achieve a good sear. Dissolve the cornstarch in water to create a slurry, which helps thicken the teriyaki sauce to the desired consistency. Serve the shrimp over freshly steamed rice to soak up the sauce and garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds.

Why the recipe is fantastic?

The taste and texture of teriyaki shrimp and rice are simply outstanding. The shrimps are tender and succulent, perfectly coated with teriyaki sauce. The combo of sweet, savory and slightly tangy creates a harmony.

In reviews, people share often to highlight the quick preparation and impressive flavor profile. It’s a crowd-pleaser at dinner parties and a favorite meal for busy families due to its simplicity and taste.

The dish also is quite healthy. Shrimp is low in calories, high in protein and rich in essential nutrients like selenium, iodine and vitamin B12. Using coconut aminos instead of traditional soy sauce reduces the sodium content, making it healthier. Paired with steamed white rice and green onions plus sesame seeds, this dish not only tastes fantastic but is also nutritious.
